This is my design for a linen dress that I have been coveting, deeply coveting, in my mind. I'm no artist, so please, no criticisms there, but I think I was able to convey to myself at least what kind of dress I wanted. (Every time I look at this drawing I think of Angela from Project Runway 3 and my mind races to that episode where the challenge was to design for SJP's Bitten line. She didn't actually draw anything and just said it wasn't part of her process. I always assumed it was because her drawings might turn out like mine=)
Well, parts of this dress are in varying stages of completion. I am using The art of fashion draping by Connie Amaden-Crawford to make the pattern pieces for the dress. I'm not sure why the Amazon rating is so low as I actually think the book is very useful. Of course I reserve a definitive judgment until after I've completed a few garments.
Today, I attached the bands to the skirt. I thought I'd show some pictures in case anyone out there wants to attach bulk-free bands to their own garments.
1. Cut a strip (I cut mine with the grain) 2 times the width of the band you would like.
2. Fold one edge 1/4" and the other edge up to meet the first edge and press. Now you will have one short side and one long side.
4. Fold the band up at the ironed fold and topstitch the band to the fabric.
5. Ta da! You've got yourself a band.
Of course there are tons of ways to do this but this one results in a bulk-free, edge-free band which I personally find aesthetically pleasing.

Your dress looks awesome, and I think it's so great that you are working on your own design! Something for me to aspire to. I like your bands at the hem - so simple but lend a special something to the garment.
Oh, I love this technique, yes bulk free and clean finished is right up my alley. Linen is perfect for this embellishment as it presses so crisply.

I'll definitely be employing this method in the future. I think it's great you're doing our own thing. I just did a post about a dress I designed and made; Although, your construction skills are leagues ahead of my own. I can't wait to see the outcome!
