Wedding disaster!

A glimpse of what I've been working on....

reddress1

I was thinking about wearing it (Vogue 7871) to a wedding we're attending next weekend in Santa Cruz. That was until I read the wedding guest dress rules, which in summary says you can't wear white, red or black. Then I got all paranoid and decided that I'd just wear this dress to breakfast with the Mr. and Mrs. the morning after. But now, I don't think I'll be wearing this to any event next weekend. Everything was smooth sailing until I got to actually trying it on, zipper and all. Hmmm.....

WHAT is THAT back fuglyness ?!#?#??#!? (*hangs head in sadness*)

Just in case anyone is curious what this dress should look like, here are a couple of links:
Pattern Review (of course)
This awesome version from Angry Chicken
and last but not least this awesomeness from Belle Epoque.

Oh ya, did I mention that this pattern is VERY EASY? How did I manage to mess this one up?

I'm not sure what you mean? Are you sure it's not the angle since you're holding the camera up?

Ya, it's actually even worse. I'm slightly twisted because of the camera so you can't see it all but there is definitely a huge poof on my upper back.

I am suspecting you have a small upper back. Perhaps that poof is because you have good, upright posture and you need to take out some extra width and length. in the upper back area. You need to use a hand mirror as well as a full length mirror to check for vertical wrinkles that might indicate too much width across the upper back, or to check for extra length between shoulder seam and side seam. If it is just too much width, you might be able to create a faux princess seam/dart down the back over that shoulder and save the garment. Have someone pin that extra fabric into a dart until the poof disappears. You may have to release the shoulder seam an inch or two and then re-stitch. If that is the problem, you can alter the pattern with an "L" shaped slash, or via the pivot and slide method. The shoulder seams would then be stitched with the front shoulder seam down toward the feed dogs so that the extra fabric can be eased in.

Such a pretty dress, and I honestly didn't see the back poufiness until you mentioned it.

Thanks Patsijean. I've been looking at some books about fitting and it seems that I might have a narrow back. I was trying to figure out if there was a way to fit it without making the back shoulder narrower than the front shoulder. For some reason that just seems weird to me because I think my front and back shoulder are the same width. It's my back that is significantly smaller than my front (at least when I had my fiance measure me). I'm going to try the dart in the back first and see if that will fix it. Thanks for your suggestions!
